Dengan demikian lagu “Mangu” tidak hanya merepresentasikan ekspresi emosi semata, tetapi juga realitas sosial bahwa cinta sering kali tunduk pada pertimbangan rasional dan norma keagamaan.
Abstract
This study examines the meaning of interfaith love as represented in the song lyrics of “Mangu” by Fourtwnty ft. Charita Utami, treating the song as a cultural text through the application of Roland Barthes’ semiotic analysis and James Coleman’s rational choice theory. Barthes’ semiotic analysis is employed to examine the levels of denotation, connotation, and myth, while Coleman’s rational choice theory is used to analyze how the characters’ decisions in the song are shaped by rational considerations in response to the conflicts arising from an interfaith romantic relationship. These two theoretical frameworks provide an understanding of how emotions, cultural values, and rational considerations interact in the representation of interfaith love in the song “Mangu.” The novelty of this study lies in the integration of semiotic analysis and rational choice theory in interpreting popular song lyrics, positioning the characters not only as emotional subjects but also as rational actors confronting social and religious conflicts. This research adopts a qualitative approach, with data collected through document analysis of relevant literature and close examination of the song lyrics. The findings indicate that the denotative meaning of “Mangu” depicts the separation of two individuals with different religious beliefs. At the connotative level, the song reveals an emotional dilemma between love and personal faith experienced by each character. Meanwhile, the emerging myth reflects a social ideology that ideal love can only be realized through shared values and religious homogeneity. From the perspective of rational choice theory, the decision to separate is presented as a rational act based on weighing the costs and benefits of maintaining an interfaith relationship. This study contributes to an understanding of Indonesia’s plural social reality, in which interfaith relationships remain a sensitive issue. Thus, “Mangu” does not merely represent emotional expression but also reflects a broader social reality in which love is often subject to rational considerations and religious norms.
