DUETS AND STITCHES: EXPLORING TIKTOK AS A SUPPLEMENTARY ENGLISH SPEAKING TOOL FOR UNIVERSITY STUDENTS
Keywords:

This research investigates students' perceptions of the impact of using TikTok on their speaking skills, identifying the benefits and challenges they encounter in the Speaking Class of the English Education Study Department at Tadulako University. Utilizing a mixed-methods approach, the study collected quantitative data through questionnaires from 19 students and qualitative data via semi-structured interviews with 5 selected participants using purposive sampling. The findings indicate that a substantial majority of students (89.5%) perceive TikTok as easy to use and beneficial for improving their speaking skills. Key features like "duet" and "stitch" were highlighted as highly effective for practicing pronunciation and intonation. However, students also reported significant challenges, including distractions from irrelevant content, encounters with inappropriate material, and feelings of awkwardness when creating videos. This study concludes that while students view TikTok as a fun and valuable supplementary tool for language learning, it is not considered a replacement for traditional methods. These findings underscore the need for educators to provide guidance on effectively utilizing TikTok while minimizing potential distractions.
